Rotary and the Salvation Army
Posted by Brylie Gray
Rotary Club of Christchurch Sunrise has had a change of location for their morning meetings. This was driven by the want to align ourselves with other community driven organisations. We are very pleased to announce our alliance with The Salvation Army, their mission statement is broken down into 3 segments: Caring for people, transforming lives and reforming society. The Rotary International mission statement is as follows, “The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.” Now you will understand what we see as our aligning factors, however, we may not go about them the same ways and that is ok. We acknowledge our differences in beliefs and value the good we both want from our community.
The members of the Christchurch Sunrise Rotary Club are diverse and bring many skills and passion to the table to assist our club in fulfilling our mission statement.
YES – Young Enterprise Scheme

Posted by Marty Gale on Oct 23, 2019
Gray Crawford has led the charge on our Club getting involved with YES, the Young Enterprise Scheme.  And a very worthwhile scheme it is.

For those of you that haven’t heard of YES before, or can’t recall it from previous years, it has been running now for 39 years and is all about inspiring young people discover their entrepreneurial potential in both business and life.

There are three ways that our Club can continue to be involved with YES
  1. Our members personally supporting and mentoring the teams
  2. Our Club being an ongoing financial sponsor for an annual award for excellence – as our Club has done this year
  3. Simply make a donation

Rotary founder Paul Harris Christchurch Visit 1935
In 1935 Paul and wife Jean Harris toured Australia and New Zealand. Paul recalled, “With the cooperation of Rotarians and local governments, I have planted friendship trees in the parks and playgrounds on five continents of the world and even on some of the major islands of the seas. Our trees stood as symbols of international understanding and good-will.”

On 16th April 1935 Paul was in Christchurch. In a busy day having a welcome at Lyttelton wharf, had a civic reception with the mayor at 11am, a meeting with Rotary Club of Christchurch at 12:30pm and managed to plant a friendship tree in the Botanic Gardens. On the 17th he took the train to Dunedin stopping in Timaru and Oamaru on the way.
